Project Info

Following Hurricane Katrina, we identified a nine block segment for revitalization in the St. Roch neighborhood of New Orleans, including the St. Roch Market, the St. Roch Avenue neutral ground, historic housing stock, commercial buildings, the St. Roch Cemetery, Our Lady Star of the Sea Church and School, and Independence Square, a neighborhood park.  The revival envisioned a healthy and vibrant neighborhood, becoming a model for rebuilding in New Orleans.

The envisioned scope included repair and renovation of the St. Roch Market and the St. Roch Avenue neutral ground, renovation of homes and commercial buildings, and building on vacant lots.  We proposed giving priority to low income residents and promoting ownership, cleaning and landscaping the neutral ground and sidewalks, and restoring Independence Square for neighborhood use.  Additionally, we proposed working with existing organizations such as the Creole Cottage Project and Rebuilding Together, and raising the funds needed for bricks and mortar and project management.
